The threat of Foot and Mouth Disease, an eradicated disease coming back is to be taken seriously. And on this note, the PCSP had submitted their position paper to both the Secretary of the Department of Agriculture and the Director of the Bureau of Animal Industry, expressing their concerns and providing technical guidance on testing needed for incoming live importations susceptible to FMD.
Several industry actions have resulted in exposé articles, position papers by like-minded animal industry groups and culminating in a senate hearing called by Sen. Cynthia Villar. Calls to bring the erring parties to court have seen no action to date. Though assurances have been given as to the destruction of the embryos and the decision to source from a less FMD risk country (declared as FMD-free without vaccination, by OIE) – cattle and swine veterinarians are still wary. We await more information and action on this very important issue.
